Composition

According to the Electricity Act, 1999, the Authority consists of five members of high moral character, proven integrity and competence, appointed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, with the approval of Cabinet.

Leadership of the Authority
 
The Electricity Act, 1999, empowers the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development to appoint a chairperson of the Authority, out of the five members appointed and approved by Cabinet. The Minister is mandated to appoint a member who is qualified and experienced in management, economics or in the Electricity Supply Industry. 
 
Other Members of the Authority
 
The Electricity Act, 1999, stipulates that the other members of the Authority shall have proven experience in:
  1. Engineering, either in the generation, transmission or distribution of electricity;
  2. Law, administration or management;
  3. Finance or economics;
  4. The energy industry; or
  5. Environmental matters.
Each member of the Authority is required to at least be qualified in one of the areas specified above.
 
The Chief Executive Officer
 
According to the Electricity Act, 1999, the Chief Executive Officer is an Ex officio member of the Authority, but does not have a right to vote at any meeting of the Authority.
 
Tenure of Office
 
According to the Electricity Act, 1999, a member of the Authority holds office for a term of five years and is eligible for reappointment. The Act, does not allow a member of the Authority to be appointed for more than two terms.
