On 30th May 2018, the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), celebrated yet another milestone; the ISO 9001:2015 Certification in Quality Management Systems.

ISO 9001:2015 is an International Standard for Quality Management Systems that provides organizations with a set of principles that ensure a common sense approach to the management of business activities, to consistently achieve customer satisfaction while standardizing their processes and continuously improving effectiveness of the business processes.

ERA officially marked the ISO 9001:2015 Certification at a dinner held at Kampala Serena Hotel, with the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda officiating as the Chief Guest.

In his remarks, the Chief Guest, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, commended ERA and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development for the progress made in transforming the Energy Sector and the Country as a whole. Dr. Rugunda further added that the NRM Government recognized that the Energy and Mineral Development Sector had great potential for creating employment in the country, and that the Government of Uganda was committed to ensuring that there was reliability and efficiency in power supply, to match the demand arising from population growth and economic development needs.

In a speech delivered by the Minister of State for Minerals, Hon. Peter Lokeris, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Eng. Irene Muloni, commended ERA for the tireless efforts in improving the Electricity Supply Industry, which had led to acquiring of the ISO 9001:2015 Certification. The Minister noted that ISO Certification was associated with a range of benefits that the Sector was yet to enjoy, as ERA continued to comply with the required standards. He urged the ERA Board, Management and Staff to work towards sustaining this Certification.

The ERA Board Chairman, Mr. Richard Santo Apire, while addressing stakeholders thanked His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for making the Energy Sector a priority, which created a conducive and enabling environment for Local and Foreign Direct Investment into the Sector. He noted that the adoption of a Quality Management System was a strategic decision ERA took years ago, with a view of improving its overall performance in executing its Statutory Mandate and to provide a sound basis for Sustainable Development initiatives within the Electricity Supply Industry. 

Addressing stakeholders at the dinner, the ERA CEO, Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako, noted that the ISO 9001:2015 Certification marks a very important milestone in the history of ERA. She added that ERA regulated a dynamic Industry therefore the aspect of Quality Management was pivotal to ERA’s operations, to ensure Standardization, Efficiency, Stakeholder Satisfaction and Sustainability of the Electricity Supply Industry.

ERA’s ISO Certification followed a thorough scrutiny of the processes and procedures undertaken by ERA in the execution of its mandate.  The scrutiny was undertaken by an independent auditor, and it covered ERA’s functional areas of Licensing, Setting of Electricity Tariffs, Setting and Enforcement of Standards, Reporting on the Industry, and Approval of Investments, among others.

The dinner was attended by dignitaries including; the NRM Secretary General, Ms. Justine Kasule Lumumba, Justices of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, Honorable Members of Parliament, Members of the ERA Board, and other stakeholders in the Energy Sector.
