On 9th July 2018, the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) announced new Electricity End - User (Retail) Tariffs applicable for customers served by Umeme Limited during the Third Quarter (July - September) of 2018, with a reduction in the Tariff for the Extra-Large Industrial consumers.

According to the approved Tariff schedule, consumers under the Extra-Large Industrial Consumer Category will pay UGX 314.1 from UGX 369.5, implying a 15% reduction. This was attributed to the modification of the Bujagali Energy Limited Licence, which provided for the debt refinancing of the Bujagali Hydro Power Plant.

A statement issued by ERA indicated that the positive impact of the Bujagali Power Plant debt refinancing would be extended to other consumer categories in a phased manner, during subsequent Tariff reviews.

There was an increment in the Tariffs for the other consumer categories as thus: Domestic consumers - UGX 771.1 from UGX 718.5, Commercial Consumers - UGX 687.0 from UGX 647.6, Medium Industrial Consumers - UGX 615.3 from UGX 591.5, Large Industrial Consumers – UGX 383.8 from UGX 374.4 and Street Lighting - UGX 752.8 from UGX 701.5 per unit. The increment in the Tariffs was attributed to the depreciation of the Uganda Shilling against the United States Dollar during the Second Quarter of 2018 and increment in the international price of fuel, among other factors.

The new Tariffs are applicable to all electricity consumer bills raised by Umeme Limited, based on meter readings and Yaka purchases taken in the period July to September 2018.
