On Wednesday, 12^th September 2018, the country experienced a total power supply blackout starting at 9:22pm. The blackout originated from power supply instability due to vandalization of five (5) transmission towers between Nalubaale and Lugogo by unscrupulous individuals.

The System Operator, Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), did an emergency power supply restoration around 11:00pm on Wednesday, 12^th September 2018.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) regrets the incident and any associated inconvenience that may have been caused to electricity consumers and other stakeholders.

The Authority further urges the general public to desist from and report acts of vandalism of electrical installations, which could potentially cause damage to life and property; and is punishable as prescribed by Section 87 of the Electricity Act, 1999.

As the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited works to restore the vandalized infrastructure, ERA condemns in the strongest terms the perpetrators of acts of vandalism of electricity installations and warns if caught, they will be criminally prosecuted and shall face the full wrath of the Law.

The Authority remains committed to preventing or/and mitigating similar occurrences in the future to ensure efficient and reliable electricity supply in Uganda, as mandated under the Electricity Act, Chapter 145 of the Laws of Uganda.
