On 22^nd February 2021, the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) commenced engagements with stakeholders in Bundibugyo and Ntoroko Districts about power supply in the Rwenzori region. The engagements undertaken jointly with the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Bundibugyo Energy Cooperative Society (BECS) involved various stakeholders, including the District Leadership, Consumers, Cultural Leaders, and the Media.

 Officiating at the Engagement Meetings, CPA Edward Iruura, the Director Financial Services at ERA, who represented the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, informed stakeholders that the Authority had made the decision not to renew the License for Distribution and Sale of Electricity held by BECS based on a ten-year assessment of BECS’ performance which indicated that BECS was no longer able to meet its obligations under the License.

CPA Iruura further noted that the Authority had appointed UEDCL to operate the Rwenzori Service Territory; and requested the Leadership and Electricity Consumers of Bundibugyo and Ntoroko Districts to support UEDCL to improve Electricity service delivery in the region.

The Managing Director of UEDCL, Mr. Paul Mwesigwa, while addressing the stakeholders of Bundibugyo and Ntoroko Districts pledged to improve service delivery to the benefit of all Electricity Consumers in the area.

The official handover of the operation and management of the Network, Assets, and Customers of BECS to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited is scheduled to take place on 31st March 2021; and UEDCL will be fully operational by 1^st April 2021.
