On 30th April 2024, Kyegegwa Rural Electricity Cooperative Society Limited (KRECS) handed over the operations of Distribution and Supply of Electricity in the areas of Kyegegwa, Kyenda, Maanyi, Buwooya, Busaana, Galilaaya, Kasiiso, and Nakasongola to the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL).

The handover ceremony took place at Katente Country Resort in Kyegegwa District, attended by among others, representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), UEDCL, KRECS and the media. It included documentation (system maps and customer information) as well as physical assets such as vehicles.

The handover of the concession followed the natural end of the 10-Year License for Distribution and Supply of Electricity issued by ERA to KRECS in 2014. The KRECS licence was not renewed in line with the Cabinet’s directive issued in October 2022 that approved the non-renewal of all concession agreements and consequently, the licences for the various private Distribution Companies upon their expiry.

MEMD and ERA thanked KRECS for its service over the Licence period, which had enabled the extension of Electricity services to the rural communities, and urged UEDCL to ensure that customers receive uninterrupted Supply of Electricity.

On its part, UEDCL assured the customers that there would be continuity of supply and that the company was looking forward to improving service delivery in the areas of Kyegegwa, Kyenda, Maanyi, Buwooya, Busaana, Galilaaya, Kasiiso, and Nakasongola.
