On 16th April 2024, the Electricity Regulatory Authority completed its Corporate Social Responsibility Project code-named Women in Energy for the year 2024 at Nyakasura School in Fort Portal, Kabarole District.

During the outreach at Nyakasura School, Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako, the Chief Executive Officer of the Electricity Regulatory Authority encouraged girls to strive for excellence and avoid weapons of mass destruction, namely: the love for money, alcohol, drugs, sexual immorality, and social media.

Dr. Sarah Wasagali Kanaabi, the Chairperson of ERA encouraged the students to be focused, disciplined, to work hard, and believe in themselves so as to compete with their male counterparts in the Science field.

Dr. Kanaabi also noted that parents and the public should be sensitized to change their mindset and support girls to take up Science and Technology courses.

The Head Teacher of Nyakasura School, Reverend Richardson Balinda, appreciated ERA for the wisdom shared with the students, which was expected to transform their mindsets.

The outreach at Nyakasura School notably had representation from Frontier Energy and Umeme Limited.

The Women in Energy Project, spear-headed by the eminent Women in the Energy Sector aims to inspire young females to break the stereotypes and negative attitudes towards Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – STEM. Since the project’s inception, a total of Forty-Eight schools in different parts of the Country have been visited, and over 40,000 young women across the country have been impacted.

The 2024 Edition of the Women in Energy Project was launched on 4th March, 2024, through a Twitter (X) discussion on the theme: The Need to Increase the Participation of Women at Strategic Level in the Energy Sector.

The Authority subsequently held the Second Edition of the Women in Energy Forum and Dinner on 13th March, 2024, at the Golf Course Hotel, Kampala, with an impressive participation by Secondary schools, Technical Institutes, Tertiary institutions, Government Agencies, and players in the Energy Sector, among others.

On Friday, 15th March 2024, the Authority launched the outreach-to-schools component of the Women in Energy Project, at Mt. St. Mary’s College Namagunga. This was followed by the outreach in Eastern Uganda (hosted by Mbale Secondary School and Dabani Girls School in Mbale and Busia Districts, respectively). The outreach component was concluded in Western Uganda at Nyakasura School.
