On 3rd August 2024, the President of the Republic of Uganda, His Excellency General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, commissioned the 289km Kole – Gulu – Nebbi – Arua 132 Kilovolt Transmission Line (and associated 80MVA 132/33kV substations at Kole, Gulu, Nebbi and Arua), connecting West Nile to the National Electricity Grid.
The Connection of West Nile to the National Grid was achieved through the Grid Extension and Reinforcement Project (GERP), which was initiated by the Government of Uganda in collaboration with the World Bank. The project is part of a broader initiative aimed at extending Electricity access to underserved regions across the country in alignment with Uganda’s national objective to achieve Universal Access to Electricity by 2030.
The President, in his address at the Commissioning ceremony, indicated that the Government has always prioritized the Energy Sector; and called on investors to seize the opportunity to establish factories in the region to consume the Electricity.
While addressing the guests, the Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, recognized and applauded the Authority for the technical leadership provided to make the Grid Extension and Reinforcement Project a success.
The significance of connecting West Nile to the National Grid cannot be overstated. With the national grid now accessible, businesses can operate more efficiently, schools can enhance their educational resources, and healthcare facilities will be better equipped to serve the community. Agricultural productivity is also expected to increase, as farmers can utilize electric-powered equipment and irrigation systems.
The Commissioning ceremony was attended by, among others, Officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the Political Leadership of the West Nile Region, the Clergy, Officials from the Electricity Supply Industry, and the media.
Relatedly, the Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, Her Excellency Major (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, on 4th August 2024, Commissioned the 80 MVA 132/33kV Arua Transmission Substation in Arua District. This substation is part of the wider 289km Kole – Gulu – Nebbi – Arua 132 Kilovolt Transmission Line project. It is expected to provide Reliable, Quality Power Supply to Arua District and surrounding areas.
