Kampala, Uganda – August 8, 2024: The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) of Uganda hosted a four-day benchmarking visit for a delegation of nine representatives from the Somaliland Energy Commission (SEC) between 5th and 8th August 2024. The visit aimed to leverage ERA's extensive experience as a leading African electricity regulator to support SEC’s development of a robust regulatory framework for Somaliland’s energy sector.

The Somaliland delegation was particularly keen on understanding ERA’s methodologies in key areas such as tariff setting, licensing regulations, and standards for electrical installations and technicians. To provide a comprehensive overview of Uganda’s electricity landscape, the delegation also engaged with the management of Umeme Limited, the country's main electricity distributor, and toured the National Control Center operated by Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL).

ERA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. John Julius Wandera, highlighted the authority's commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism during his address to the delegation. He emphasized that these core values underpin ERA's operations and ensure the impartial execution of its regulatory mandate.

The SEC delegation expressed gratitude for the knowledge and insights shared by ERA and committed to adopting similar practices in their regulatory work. Established in July 2020, the Somaliland Energy Commission is responsible for overseeing and regulating the country's energy sector. The delegation, led by SEC Chairman Mr. Hassan Mohamoud Sufi, comprised members of the commission's management team and representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.
