ERA & Uganda Red Cross Partner to Empower Girls in STEM
- Hits: 62
The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) is reinforcing its commitment to empowering young girls by partnering with the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) under the Keep a Girl in School initiative. This collaboration goes beyond a campaign it is a strategic commitment to ensuring that girls have the support they need to stay in school, thrive academically, and pursue their dreams.
As part of this initiative, ERA has procured 1,000 sanitary pads, which will be distributed to girls in schools across the country during the nationwide Women in Energy (WIE) 2025 outreach. By addressing critical barriers to education, such as menstrual health challenges, ERA and URCS are empowering girls to remain in school and build a foundation for success.
A Growing Movement for Women in Energy
Since its launch in 2019, the Women in Energy (WIE) campaign has evolved into a transformative movement, actively challenging gender stereotypes that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers are only for boys. Through mentorship, advocacy, and outreach programs, ERA has been at the forefront of inspiring and equipping young girls to envision themselves as future leaders in the energy sector and beyond.
- The 2025 edition of the WIE campaign is already in motion, with ERA embarking on a nationwide school outreach program aimed at:
- Mentoring and inspiring young girls to pursue STEM careers.
- Engaging students in discussions on the role of women in the energy sector.
- Challenging societal barriers and advocating for gender inclusivity.
The journey begins with schools in Kalangala, followed by visits to Kabale, Masaka, Kasese, and Kampala. These interactive sessions will empower students with knowledge and role models, helping them recognize the vast opportunities available in the energy sector.
The campaign will culminate in the Women in Energy Forum in Kampala, where industry leaders, policymakers, and young professionals will convene to celebrate progress, share insights, and reinforce efforts toward gender inclusion in the sector.
ERA’s Commitment to Gender Inclusion
ERA’s dedication to empowering women in the energy sector is not just in words—it is evident in its leadership and actions. By fostering partnerships and creating opportunities, ERA is setting an example for the industry, demonstrating that inclusion and diversity are integral to progress.
The Uganda Red Cross Society now joins a growing coalition of partners supporting this cause. This includes key players in the electricity industry, such as:
- Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL)
- Generation and distribution companies
- The Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers (UIPE)
- Academic institutions
Together, these institutions are committed to equipping girls with the knowledge, mentorship, and opportunities they need to thrive in STEM and energy careers.
A Partnership That Drives Change
This collaboration between ERA and the Uganda Red Cross Society is more than an initiative it is a game-changer. By tackling barriers to education, promoting gender inclusivity, and fostering mentorship, ERA and URCS are making a lasting impact on the future of Uganda’s energy sector.
The future of energy is diverse, inclusive, and driven by empowered women, and ERA is leading the way.
